Featured Gift: Tied Up and Tousled

7 Dec

Through the beauty of the internet I was introduced to one of the most adorable accessories on the planet!

Tied Up & Tousled

I had a little chat with the designer, Kate, and her creative director (& sister!) Anne about their amazing business together:

1) How did you begin designing Tied Up & Tousled?

“I have been a Hair Designer for 8 years. While I was building my portfolio I started making head pieces for photo shoots. They helped me capture a certain aesthetic. They gave the woman in the photos a clearer identity and revealed a lot about my point of view. I also studied Fashion Design and Fine Art Textile at Kent State University. Creating headbands was just a culmination of all my passions; fashion, beauty, fine art, and self-expression.

I still make all the pieces by hand in my studio in my one bedroom apartment but I think that’s what makes them so special and unique.”

2) What is your favorite way to style your pieces?

“My style is effortless and easy so I love to pair a glamorous sequins band or intricately beaded piece with tousled hair and jeans and a plain tee. It’s ALL about the accessories for me.”

3) Who is your biggest style inspiration?

“I don’t have a specific style icon. I look at nature. I look to the past. I love vintage. I take a lot of inspiration from Native American culture. It’s authentic and raw.”

All of the Tied Up and Tousled pieces are insanely beautiful. Any free spirited girl (or boy!) would look gorgeous in these pieces of artwork. My favorites are absolutely the Sienna (two above), the Natalie (with gold chains-not pictured), and the Stella (first photo). Whether you love sequins, feathers, beads, peace signs, these make the perfect gift for you, your best friend, or both!

With such affordable pricing ($24-60) these are the must-have gift for all your friends. Each hair accessory has a different personality, just like each of your friends and family. I could not imagine a more beautiful, thoughtful gift. My favorite part- there are pieces for every season! Rock the gold for the holidays, flowers in the spring, feathers during summer, and the rich reds and golds next fall!

The best news is, Kate and Anne have offered a 15% discount to Everyday to Runway readers! What to Wear: Thanksgiving

23 Nov

Thanksgiving is here! A holiday that revolves around the largest meal you’ll eat in all 365 days this year. My rules of the dinner game  always include: a loose top, an a-line skirt to highlight your waist, tights for warmth and the highest of heels to keep the girlie look despite that second (or third) piece of pie you ate!

Here are some options, and while prices range from high to low, I like to use it more for inspiration… use your style, taste, and wallet to mix and match for what will be your best outfit for the holiday! I paired 3 outfits below that I would choose if I had my unlimited budget:

1) Long Sleeve Tee, Top Shop, $32. 2) Animal Print Tank, Top Shop, $60. 3) Julien Macdonald La Garçonne $918.

4) M Missoni wool merino mini, $525. 5) Opening Cermony La Garçonne $322. 6) Uniqlo Pleated Skirt, $24.

7) Miu Miu Suede Platforms, $650. 8) Forever 21 Combat boots, $28. 9) Steve Madden booties, $90.

I love the look of a waist cinching skirt, especially when they’re wool and cozy like these options, they’re perfect when paired with a loose tee and some fierce shoes. Hope you have an amazing, cozy Holiday with friends and family and look adorable while you’re at it!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Mani of the Week: Extra-va-vaganza

17 Nov

Today’s manicure is OPI’s “Extra-va-vaganza” from the Burlesque collection.

The super refined multi-color polish has a base of orange but glitter consisting of golds and blues as well.

I like it’s a party in a polish and I will be shining this sparkly color all over NYC this week ♥

The Kitschy It Girl.

9 Nov

One of the main reasons I love New York is the spontaneity. There is always something to do and for the most part, it comes up at the spur of the moment! Around 3 pm today my friend invited me to a free Katy Perry concert at the Roseland Ballroom promoting something or another. Regardless that I had no interest in the product, I thought seeing Ms. Kitty Purry could be quite a fun change of my usual Monday nights.

As you would expect from the eccentric pop star, her bright purple mini dress was covered in cupcakes, her set was abundant with peppermints, lollipops and cotton candy and her microphone was a cascading glittering rainbow.

Katy is 100% unique, cussing but girlie, inappropriate but adorable and it got me thinking to what an empowering role model she is. She is a no-BS, wild child with a fascinating fashion sense and a mind-blowingly powerful voice. Her cupcake bustier and signature blue wig give her a lightness while her music, like newest release Firework, inspires in a truthful way.

I love that she can do kitschy just as well as she does classy. Katy covers December’s Harper’s Bazaar and looks insanely gorgeous in the pages.

Katy may not play by the rules of the game, but at least she’s having fun. And as a little bit of inspiration for the rest of your week, try adding something new into your wardrobe. Have a little fun, that doesn’t mean you have to go all smurf blue hair on us, but cross your fashion boundaries a little bit! And inspire yourself in a personal way. Live it up, like the California Girl!

Photos were taken by me. Magazine spread from NY Daily News. I do not own the video, it is copyright of EMI.

OPI Says, “Go Goth.”

22 Sep

One of my favorite places to go for everything nail polish related is the site Vampy Varnish. While doing some early Halloween detective work I stumbled upon a new review of hers featuring the new OPI Nail Collection for Halloween 2010. We all know how much I love OPI, and well, nail polish in general, so when I hear that a new collection is coming soon dedicated solely to my second favorite holiday- I was ecstatic!

This mini set includes 4 smaller sized bottles in deep, dark shades that are bound to bring out a spookier spirit. The colors are diverse in the collection which is always something I like to see. I was a little sad to see two reds in their Alice in Wonderland Collection so having four separate shades is appreciated.

Note: All photos are from Vampy Varnish.

SANGUINE: This deep shimmered red is perfect on toes all fall long. I’d love this nail for the Holidays to bring some subtle cheer without breaking into the fire engine red bottle. The color still pops despite the shine and shimmer and will be a perfect red for this season.

UNRIPENED: This black shade is disguised into a deep blue by the abundance of flecks of green-blue glitter. I would rock this color all winter long on my nails. I love that the intense glitter adds and edgy glam to the basic black.

NEVERMORE: My favorite of the collection is this royal purple full-glittered polish. The blue shimmer gives it a multi-dimensional tone that makes it “Wicked Witch of the West” perfection.

OBSCURITY: A satin matte black that is definitely dare-to-wear. I am not a fan of matte polishes personally because it me, it takes out the girlie shine aspect that I most enjoy. But if you aren’t opposed to matte, this is one serious polish. I like that Obscurity still has a subtle sheen to it that is unique to a matte so this might be one I’d try.

OPI’s Collections are always a bit hit and I don’t doubt this will be any exclusion. I’m a fan of mini-bottles because as an aficionado of polishes I have far too many to count so having more of less is a win-win in my book! What do you think? Would you rock this polishes come the ghoulish night?

StyleCaster Style-Over.

22 Aug

A few weeks ago I was treated to a day of style with the lovely ladies at StyleCaster for a “Style-over” story. As a California girl right out of college (well, a year ago) my closet consists of primarily sundresses, sorority tees, and a whole lot of jeans. Now that I am a full-time working girl in New York City, one of the fashion capitals of the world, I have realized I need to step up my personal style. Despite being able to identify pieces from collections across the fashion board, I would live in my slouchy tanks and skinny jeans.

Thanks to a few of the girls in the fashion department I spent a day full of shopping, beauty and achieving a major glam-factor. We started the day at Bloomingdales, trying on my favorite brands: Alice + Olivia, Elizabeth and James, Donna Karan, and more. If I could have, I would have honestly picked up almost every piece that I tried on!

This Cynthia Steffe dress was too chic for words. But ultimately we decided on an even better, brighter dress!

We then headed over to Ric Pipino’s salon in SoHo for a MAJOR change… Ric talked about my lifestyle with me and I told him about how working in my industry I’m out late a lot and end up spending 1.5 hours a night showering, blow drying, and then straightening my hair in order to get the unruly knotted tangles out of my “kindergarten hair.” Ric’s consultations are standard during an appointment with him and together we discussed the best option for my hair. I loved that he listened and gave me options instead of just deciding what he thought was best for me.

Ric decided that bangs would help bring out my eyes, and create a chic factor that is NYC-worthy. He also cut about five inches off my eternally-long hair. He said this would create a smoother line from my bangs and lift a lot of weight off my neck in this summer heat. My thick hair would always end up in a ponytail by 2 PM and texturing and thinning it created more movement rather than my long, blunt cut that I previously had. But the BEST treatment of the day was my BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT! Honestly the most life changing thing I have ever done in my beauty-life. I will be following up with a full post soon but let me tell you, Ric’s Salon is the best place to go and there is no way I will ever go back to my old frizz-prone hair now that this treatment exists. The three hour process (thank you Hector!) has cut down my nightly routine to a miniscule of what it was before. Stay tuned for a more detailed post.

After a round of makeup and deciding on a final look we have the final result…

Yaay!!! The hot pink Cynthia Steffe dress, Bloomingdales’ belt, Dannijo ring and makeup look by Face Atlier with my new shorter chic hair completed my new NYC Style-Over!

Head over to the full article HERE to see all the pictures, credits and to read the piece by the fantastic Janice over at StyleCaster. I had such a blast with the girls over there and have received a ton of compliments on my new look, and truly feel that I have more of a desire to edge up my look and have fun when getting dressed in the morning rather than just throwing on my favorite sundress and sandals. New York City is full of fashionistas and I feel like I am now one not just on the inside with Everyday to Runway but also, projecting it on the outside with my new look!

MK for MC.

8 Aug

With September Issues slowly making their way into my mailbox I am realizing that this is absolutely my favorite times of year. Tourists are slimming out in my hidden NYC areas, tans are ever-present, and we’re diving into prime fashion season. 250+ page magazines are keeping my to-do list packed, my want/need/covet list longer than ever, and the desire to snuggle into a fall knit constant. With the excitement building for New York Fashion Week we only have our beloved September Issues to tide us over.

I picked up Marie Claire‘s Mary Kate Olsen cover today and cannot wait to delve into the chic-crammed pages.

The frail fashionista is joining her sister, Ashley, as a Marie Claire September Issue Cover girl (Ashley in ’09) and it is RIGHT. Aside from the fact that the new mood board-inspired spreads in Marie Claire are making it quickly one of my favorite mag’s, I also am a die hard MK&A fan reciting Passport to Paris quotes on the regular. The MK spread may not involve an elaborate scene or story line (unlike here) the clothes absolutely speak for themselves.

Alexander McQueen, Burberry Prorsum, Dior, Gucci, Givenchy, Dolce & Gabbana, Giambattista Valli all adorn these fabulous fall photos and make me fall. in. LOVE. Mary Kate’s chameleon style is perfection for the feminine tulle, high fashion fur, glam lace and edgy knits. MK is absolutely a style icon for me and I am so excited to see her back on the scene and featured in this issue.
